How to Find Secret Rooms

2026-07-15

Each floor in Enter the Gungeon usually has one secret room containing chests, shrines, and NPCs — learn how to locate it reliably and open it without wasting resources.

How to Find Secret Rooms

Secret rooms are rooms that don't appear on the map by default. Most floors have one, though it's possible to have none or several. Their entrances are hidden in walls and require specific methods to open.

What secret rooms can contain

Locating secret rooms

There are three ways to locate a secret room: read it straight off an item, test the wall itself, or narrow the search down from visual cues in the layout.

Locating it with items

These items reveal secret room locations directly, no guesswork needed:

Testing the wall

Without those items, shoot suspect walls with a non-infinite-ammo weapon — entrance walls develop visible cracks. Lower-damage guns need more shots before cracks appear; enemy bullets also work. To save ammo entirely, walk straight into a wall: if the character plays the walking animation without moving, there's an entrance there.

Narrowing it down visually

Visual cues also help: entrance walls are slightly different in color from surrounding walls (most noticeable in chest rooms); a corridor-width indent in a wall is a strong hint; and a short dead-end passage terminating at a wall (especially in shrine rooms) often hides an entrance. Entrances never appear behind room objects, and walls with no space behind them can be skipped.

Opening the entrance

Once found, use one of the following to open the wall:

Efficient search strategy

Checking every wall wastes ammo and time. Prioritize in this order:

  • On the way through chest rooms, quickly shoot the wall on the side with no exit — chest rooms are small and quick to check
  • In any non-BelloBello NPC room, check the walls — secret rooms connect most often to shops, chest rooms, NPC rooms, dead-end corridors, and elevator exits
  • After killing the Boss, spend leftover BlankBlanks in likely rooms — BlankBlanks refill to the default (usually 2) on the next floor anyway
  • The starting room, boss room, the room just before the boss, the room containing the Old CrestOld Crest, and the room leading to the Abbey never have secret rooms — skip them
